Portrait for “Annihilation”

After the last post, regarding the dark mood of the new F/W Versace’s collection, I remembered a portrait I did a couple years ago for the band Annihilation. The photo shown bellow is  my favorite.

Photo. Filipe Serralheiro // Model. Fábio Silva

Fábio Silva, the singer/guitar player had a really interesting image to him. And I knew I had to take advantage of his awesome tattoos, dreadlocks and his overall menacing look. ( He’s actually not menacing at all, in fact he is one of the nicest persons I know).

The shot itself is nothing more than a standard portrait, and kind of  common place for a metal musician portrait. But by carefully controlling the light and enhancing the contrasts between all the darkness (tattoos, hair, background…) and his skin, I felt really happy with the end result. So now I’m sharing it with you! 🙂

Back then I still used my old Canon 10D and these portraits were shot using only a Canon 430 EX Speedlight and a small Photoflex Umbrella. I have some older photos from their early formation from around 2004/05, wich were actually my first photo shoot ever while still at college. I’ll maybe post them here some other day, so stay sharp! 😉

For those of you who like a little heavier music be sure to check their work here!

A quick secret though! This photo was originally shot in a white background, but after I turned it black in post-production, it gained so much more strength! What do you think?

Cheers!

MUFE makeup courses

Make Up Forever’s professional make up courses continue to be a big success in Portugal, thanks to its representative Expansão York, with classes both in Lisbon and Oporto.

This time i present you with the great work from Ana Soares, one of the students that finished her course last month. Here are some shots i took.

For this photos i used three Profoto Pro Heads attached to 2 Profoto Pro-B3 Air blocks. 2 of the heads, with regular Zoom reflectors were used for the background and the other head was used as keylight with a white Beauty Dish.

On each side of the model i had a white reflector board and, from beneath, a Photoflex Silver reflector disc.

As usual i used my good old Canon EOS 7D with a Canon EF 24-70mm  f/2.8 L USM.

Make Up Forever Photoshoot

At the end of last month i shot the first of several make up shoots in collaboration with the international brand Make Up Forever.

I headed to one of their portuguese offices in Oporto and photographed the work of one of their students, Márcia Almeida. Using a two Profoto heads attached to a Profoto Pro-7s. One with a white beauty dish, in front of the model, and another one just to light the background, as i wanted a nice clean white background.

Lady of the manor

A new editorial i shot for BLESS magazine just got out. Named “Lady of the manor” it depicts a young woman living in a house full of wonders and random nonsense.

It was shot in an old house, fully decorated in a vintage style, in the typical neighborhood of Graça, in Lisbon. We wanted to give a vintage meets fashion meets Alice in wonderland feel to it and also disrupt the “innocent little girl” look commonly used in that kind of imaginary, so we introduced Gabriela, a model using her hair shaved, some tattoos and a piercing. All the editorial was shot with one Profoto head with a 5 foot octa attached to a Profoto Pro7-s to obtain a soft light on the model.
Many thanks to Photographicas for lending the lighting equipment.

New Photoshoot

Last week Carolina Sanches, soon to be mother, posed for my camera for a series of great portraits to keep memories from her pregnancy. We wanted to avoid the same old kind of photos pregnant women use to get, so i proposed to do a series of photographs like in a fashion editorial, in a different and fun way. We  headed to Southwest Production‘s studio, in LisbonThis time i used a Elinchrom and Visatec lighting. With a big Elinchrom octa as keylight, and two Visatec with umbrellas to light up the background a bit.

Students against cutback in education.

Ph.: Filipe Serralheiro

29th November was marked by yet another demonstration in the streets of Lisbon. This time the crowd was composed of higher education students.

15h was the time when hundreds of students gattered right above the Marquês de Pombal roundabout, from there they marched in a demonstration that passed in the streets of Lisbon, with the destination set at the stage of previous demonstrations and confrontations with the police, the Portuguese Parliament.

This time though the students gave the country a civic lesson, with around 500 students protesting in front of the parliament without any sort of violence, rendering the excepcional police logistics for the day unnecessary.

The students associative lider,  João Fonseca,  says that more important than the number of students involved  is the fact that the demonstration gattered the effort of 20 student associations national wide.

João Fonseca considered this is a step towards, in the future, the gathering of thousands of students in another demonstration.
